Indie video game development

An independent video game, also known as an indie game, is a video game created by a single or small group of individuals, without significant support from a video game publisher. Examples of extremely successful indie games include World of Goo, Minecraft, and Fez.

The market for indie games has experienced expansive growth since the early 2000s, largely due to new platforms for selling and distributing smaller game titles. These platforms include Steam, the PlayStation Network, Apple's App Store, and Google Play. These games may take years to be built from the ground up or can be completed in a matter of days or even hours depending on complexity, participants, and design goal.

Driven by digital distribution, the concept of independent video game development has spawned an "indie" movement. The increase in popularity of independent games has allowed increased distribution on popular gaming platforms such as the PlayStation Network, Nintendo eShop, Xbox Live and Steam.

Neither is necessarily better than the other; it all depends on the individual. Independent game development is for those who want total creative freedom, even if it means no guaranteed paycheck and extra-long hours working during their free time.

If you’d rather get an annual salary and work with a big team of people, even if your own game ideas may never be used, then working at a game studio is the better choice.
